A Tribute to Detroit’s Black Matriarchs

In honor of Women’s History Month, Black Bottom archives is partnering with Black Her Stories to archive the legacies of the Black women caregivers and changemakers past and present who have done so much to care for and protect our Black Detroit legacies.

Join us in preserving and sharing the legacies of Detroit’s Black Matriarchs by submitting photos and videos of the Black women who have inspired, shaped, and protected you. We welcome submissions that document the moms, grandmas, aunties, next-door neighbors, mentors, teachers, and sister-friends whose existence enriches our lives. We are accepting submissions of photos and videos until April 17, 2025. All submissions made by March 29, 2025, will be showcased at our event “With Love & Flowers” on March 30th from 1pm - 3pm at the Love Building (4731 Grand River Ave, Detroit, MI 48208).
