The NLC Detroit Chapter will be co-hosting this special event with the NLC National Leadership Team to focus the conversation on Detroit and around the Midwest about issues of inequality, but highlighting how private investment from individuals, foundation and corporations have had an impact on revitalizing communities that mirror similar conditions that exist in the city of Detroit.
Kimbilio is about extending, Nurturing, and Sustaining a Community of Writers from the African Diaspora. Projects include readings, presentations at professional conferences, social media networking, and an annual summer retreat for fiction writers who are members of the Kimbilio community.
Join Detroit Narrative Agency on May 10th for a public info session about the launch of their grant application! Through an open application process, seed grants of $5,000 - $10,000 will be available to artists and community members who aim to shift the narratives of Detroit through moving image projects (film, video installation, emerging multimedia forms, curatorial projects, film screenings, etc.). At the info session we will present our takeaways from three months of surveying community members and share how this feedback has informed our application process for seed grants. We will also provide details about the grant application process and allow time for a Q & A.
BOLD is an art and sound exhibit that wanders through modes of expression to explore a radical understanding of Blackness and overall self-love. Taking in our present day reality of the United States being governed by a Black President, Barack Obama, which was once only dreamed of. Using this historical time to observe race relations assisted in sparking my curiosity into black visibility on a global diaspora; creating questions like: What is Blackness? What is acting black? How do I own my Blackness?
